Savvy Stockman

Savvy Stockman 1

Using the concepts of balance-point and flight zone, a seasoned cow horse will watch for, anticipate and react to a cow changing direction. Black’s horse is moving out of the cow’s flight zone and is stepping left, toward the balance point.

Savvy Stockman 2

The correct position to push a cow away from the herd is to be out of her flight zone and on her balance point. Pushing on her balance point encourages her to move straight away.

Savvy Stockman 3

Savvy Stockman 4

To work cattle quietly and efficiently, with the least stress possible, you want to teach your horse to recognize the cow’s flight zone and stay out of it.
