Be a Better Horseman-Chris Cox

Don't Make your Horse "Gate-Sour"Ride the Journey

Some horses fixate on the gate as a way to get out of the arena and quit working.  To keep a horse from becoming gate-sour, I do a variety of tasks and exercises around the gate.  When I want my horse to rest completely, I move away from the gate so he doesn't associate the gate with stopping his work.  This is different from soaking, that very brief period of relaxation after accomplishing a task, which rewards the horse for a job well done.
