This photo was totally set up. I try not to stage scenes very often, and one reason is that your subjects sometimes stiffen up when they know they are performing for the camera. But that wasn’t the case with these four young cowpunchers on the Tongue River Ranch in West Texas back in 2008. They were more than willing to hop on their ranch geldings and trot their horses toward me for photos. They were having a blast and looked natural. I think that for a moment they forgot that I was taking photos. I just wish I knew what big story the girl on the right was telling the boy on the left.
