A few years ago I attended a colt branding in West Texas. Every July, rancher and Quarter Horse breeder Bill Smith vaccinates and marks the many foals he has raised. The event draws a large crowd, including dozens of cowboys who come to help gather the broodmares and foals. Horsemen like Earnest Wilson (left) and Jimbo Humphreys showed up at dawn, ready to help Smith with the day’s work.
