Western Horseman and Cowboy Artists of America announce 2017 Youth Art Contest winners.
Partner, by Kara Kraemer, is the overall winner of the Western Horseman/CAA Youth Art Contest.
More than 70 young artists in three age divisions—8 and under, 9–13 and 14–18—submitted works for the third annual Western Horseman/Cowboy Artists of America Youth Art Contest.
Young artists were invited to submit their best original painting or drawing with Western horses as the subject. A champion and reserve champion was selected in each age division, and an overall winner was chosen from among the three champions. The winning artwork is featured in the July 2017 issue of Western Horseman.
The overall winner, and also the champion in the 14–18 division, was Partner, a colored pencil drawing by 16-year-old Kara Kraemer of Midlothian, Texas. She receives a trip to the prestigious Cowboy Crossings in October at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The combined exhibition and sale of Cowboy Artists of America and the Traditional Cowboy Arts Association features special events, workshops and an art sale. Kara also receives a $1,000 scholarship, courtesy of the CAA’s Joe Beeler Foundation, dedicated to the development and education of artists.
Reserve champion in the 14–18 division was First Place, an acrylic by Logan Ohl, 14, of Alamo, Nevada.

The Wild, Wild West, by Angelina Eidenmiller, won the 9–13 division.
Champion in the 9–13 division was The Wild, Wild West, a watercolor by 11-year-old Angelina Eidemiller of Carmichael, California. Taking reserve in the 9–13 division was Saddle Up, an oil painting by 12-year-old Michael LeFevre of Mendon, Utah.

Diana Pilipchuk’s piece, Wild Mustang, won the 8 and under division.
The 8-and-under champion was Wild Mustang, a watercolor by Diana Pilipchuk, 8, of Sacramento, California. Reserve in the division went to Walking in the Meadow, a crayon drawing by Joanna Ryan, also 8, of Springfield, New Hampshire.

This year also included the Editor’s Award, given to John Henry, an oil by Dusti Rose Bistline. The piece unanimously stood out of the Western Horseman staff. Although the painting of the mule didn’t fall within the guidelines of having Western horses as the subject matter, the staff decided to give special recognition for such a well-done piece of art.

Champions and reserve champions will receive a variety of awards, including subscriptions and Western Horseman products. Judges were Western Horseman Senior Editor Jennifer Denison, Western Horseman Art Director Ron Bonge and CAA President Tim Cox.
Western Horseman, published since 1936, is the world’s leading magazine dedicated to stock horses. CAA, founded in 1965, has a mission to preserve and perpetuate the culture of Western life in fine art.
