Maybe it’s just dorky photographers like me that get caught up in composition, but that element is one reason why I like this image. I shot it at the Beggs Ranch in West Texas in 2011. Late afternoon light is one key to any good photo, and mares and foals certainly help as well. But on top of the subject matter and colors, this image separated itself when the mare turned her head right and swished her tail, and the foal stretched its neck toward its mama. To me, it makes your eye flow from right to left and then circle back. To me, at least, it provides a little movement in an otherwise stationary scene.
