Glorious, Despicable Dust

070928a.welch064I would guess that most Western photographers have a love-hate relationship with dust. It wreaks havoc on your camera gear, but it sure creates a lot of romance in photographs. I shot this image on the Apishapa Canyon Ranch in Colorado. I think just the right amount of dust makes this photo interesting, catching the sunrise light and giving it a cowboy feel. There have been times when I shot in dustier conditions—times when I could barely see what the cowboys were doing. I thought about how I would be spending a lot of time cleaning out all the tiny crevices in my camera. Still, those scenes are cool to photograph.
