Pink Skies

Mesa Pate Ross Hecox photo blog gray horse

The winter months can be tough for a photographer, with cold, wet conditions, fuzzy haircoats on horses, gray colors and leafless trees. But there are also scenes that develop that you wouldn’t be able to capture in the summer. One of those is brilliant colors in the sky at dusk. I was photographing Mesa Pate in Oklahoma for an article several years ago, and the setting sun in the west created a pink backdrop in the east. Mesa rode up to a hill so that there would be nothing behind her except for the pink sky. It didn’t hurt that she was riding a gray horse. The article on Mesa appeared in the March 2014 issue.
