Flashback: Miss Rodeo America Pageant 1973

MRA PamMartin

The noon break during the horsemanship event included a tour of the 40-stall boarding stable adjacent to the arena. The stable is owned by Susan DiBiase, who was Miss Rodeo Nevada during the December 1970 competition for the title.

One of the highlights of the pageant was the tour to Wayne Newton’s Casa de Shenandoah Ranch. Trainer Bob Hart showed some of the top Arabians from the ranch with Wayne explaining the merits of each horse. The ranch has some impressive horseflesh, but the entertainer himself is no less impressive. He gave freely of his time in supporting the pageant, was happy to pose with the contestants, and generally earned the title of all-round good guy. In fact, his attitude–along with that of Jack K. Pieper, general manager of the Frontier Hotel, and Hank Kovell, publicity director for the hotel¬–could only be classified as good old western hospitality.

directors of International Rodeo Management, sponsors of the pageant, line up for a photo. Seated are Louis R. Lama, Tex.; Fran L. Blomquist, Ida.; Jim Roush, Wyo.; Mary Kay Ash, Tex.; Lew Atkin, Nev.; Tom Shouse, Ida.; and Joe Golden, Arizona. Standing: George C. Rasmussen, Calif.; Ken Cross, Utah; John Jennings, Ore.; Bill Evins, Ore.; Bernie Epstein, Colo.; Jack Eddy, Calif.; George Solari, Nev.; Jack Lutz, Colo.; Jack Saulls, Wash.; Lin Helton, La Grande, Ore.; and Ed Moreland, Colorado.

The next event is scheduled to be held again at the Frontier with the hotel co-sponsoring the event with the International Rodeo Management
Association. Again, the lucky winner will be selected from a group of the top rodeo queens in the country. And along with her crown will go the opportunity to attend the major rodeos in the country, a European tour, and participation in radio, television, and other public appearances. Among her trophies will be tangible awards to include scholarships, a western wardrobe, and western gear.
