Western Horseman magazine announces the 2015 Youth Art Contest winners!

Western Horseman youth art contest winner, 13 to 18 age divisionCompanion, a mixed media painting by Della Tao of Scottsdale, Arizona, won the championship in the 13 to 18 age division of the Western Horseman Youth Art Contest.

Approximately 160 young horsemen and women sent in their best drawings or paintings of the Western stock horse, rodeo, ranching and/or cowboy life to participate in Western Horseman’s Youth Art Contest this spring. Champions and reserve champions were selected from three age divisions.

Winners were judged and chosen by Western Horseman Senior Editor Jennifer Denison, Western Horseman Art Director Ron Bonge and well-known Western artist Tim Cox, a member of the Cowboy Artists of America.

8 and under Champion: Bring It Home, oil, by Gracie Vaughan, Scottsdale, Arizona

     Reserve: Running Horse, colored pencil, by Laney Broadbent, Enola, Pennsylvania

9 to 12 Champion: Coat of Many Colors, oil, by Faith Farris, Midway, Texas

     Reserve: Poco Star, pencil, by Garrett Sod Williams, Arbon Valley, Idaho

     Reserve: Friendship Forged in Iron, oil, by Reagan Stephens, Weatherford, Oklahoma

“It’s amazing to see the talent in each age division of this competition,” Cox says. “I’m impressed by how well the young artists observed and interpreted their subject matter, and took creative licenses to express themselves.”

The champion and reserve artwork selected from each age group appears in the July 2015 issue of Western Horseman magazine, along with Cox’s critiques of the champions. Thank you to all the talented young artists who sent in their work!
