Dusti Rose Bistline, age 16, was named overall champion for her oil painting, Left Behind, and won a $1,000 scholarship.

Young artists submitted 88 pieces for the 2018 Western Horseman/Cowboy Artists of America Youth Art Contest. Champions, reserve champions and third place honorees were selected from three age divisions—8 and under, 9 to 13 and 14 to 18—with one overall grand champion chosen from among those winners.

Winners were judged and chosen by Western Horseman staff and Cowboy Artists of America members Teal Blake and Jason Scull. Judging was based on creativity, composition, drawing skill and accurate portrayal of subject matter.

New to this year’s contest, the Joe Beeler Foundation funded three scholarships toward art education, awarded in the 14-to-18 division. The champion receives $1,000, and the reserve and third place honoree are awarded  $500 and $250, respectively.

Scholarship recipients were Dusti Rose Bistline, 16, of Fredonia, Arizona, who was named overall champion for her oil painting, Left Behind; Kara Kraemer, 17, of Venus, Texas, who was reserve champion for her colored pencil/acrylic, Wild and Free; and Cheyenne Blacksher, 15, from Shamrock, Texas, who picked up third place for her acrylic painting, Doc.

The three champions’ pieces will appear at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, during the 2018 Cowboy Crossings, the annual art show and sale of the Cowboy Artists of America and the Traditional Cowboy Arts Association. The grand champion’s prize includes a trip for the winner and two guests to attend the Cowboy Crossings opening weekend in October 4-6, 2018.
