Nettles Stirrups

Best of Tack & Gear Runner-Up: Nettles Stirrups

Forty years ago, cutting horse trainer Ronnie Nettles needed a pair of stirrups for a rocking horse saddle. Oxbow stirrups dominated the 1980s, and the past Futurity Champion and Hall of Famer had every intention of putting oxbows on that saddle.

“We rode steel oxbows back then,” Nettles says. “They were hard on your ankles and brutal if they hit your knees or shins.”

Stirrups were once little more than an afterthought, so when Ronnie Nettles couldn’t find a pair built for comfort, he made his own — first from pine, then from the oak of his wheelbarrow handles. Those early stirrups marked the beginning of a stirrup-making revolution.

What began by building one stirrup at a time in the steel mechanical jig is now a business that ships worldwide. And while there are many copiers on today’s market, the “feel” trainer learned from long hours in the saddle, the intricate details necessary for superior workmanship, the quality performance and comfort sets Nettles Stirrups apart.
