Practice DallyingRanch Horsemanship

Here’s a controlled, safe way to learn to dally a rope around your horn. Hang a tire from your highline or in the barn doorway about 4 feet from the ground. When you want to practice dallying, attach a rope to the tire, then get horseback. Have someone hand you the rope after you mount your horse, or hold the rope in one hand as you mount, but be careful that you and your horse don’t get into a wreck.

Then, holding the rope in one hand, pull the tire toward you and your horse. Then, as you let the tire swing away from you, take one counterclockwise wrap around your horn with your thumb up for safety. The tire provides just enough weight on the end of your rope to make the experience seem real.
